đ Crime Prevention Advice â Window SecurityHello everyone, Weâre sharing some simple but effective steps you can take to help protect your home. Burglars often target windows because they can provide easier access than doors, especially if theyâre left unlocked or can be reached from the outside. A quick check around your property can make a big difference. đĄ Check for climbing pointsHave a look at your windows from the outside. Are there walls, bins, garden furniture or other items that could be used to reach them? If so, think about moving these away from window areas where possible. đ§ Recommended security for accessible windowsFor windows on the ground floor or those within easy reach: This helps prevent the glass being easily broken. Itâs recommended for any groundâfloor or accessible window. These prevent sash windows from being opened wide enough for someone to climb through. Ideal for windows that open outward rather than upward. Theyâre strongly recommended for all accessible windows. Remember: they only work if you use them â always lock windows before leaving home or going to bed. Perfect for ventilation while preventing a window being pushed open further from outside. Ensure the restrictor canât be picked or unlocked externally. Burglars have been known to use ladders â sometimes their own, sometimes found in gardens â to reach upper windows that appear unsecured. This may be done to avoid triggering alarms on lower floors. If youâre planning to replace windows, look for securityâaccredited products. These are tested to British standards and are insuranceâapproved. A good benchmark to look for is PAS 24:2022. A locksmith who is a member of the Master Locksmiths Association can give tailored advice on the right standard of lock and options for upgrading your window security. | ||
